Position Summary
The Water Maintenance Trainee is trained in the classroom, on-the-job and while assisting other Water Distribution personnel. The Water Maintenance Trainee must successfully complete all required classroom and field training, written and proficiency testing occurring during or prior to the end of a twenty-four (24) month training period to become eligible for consideration for advancement to the position of Water Maintenance Worker.

Essential Functions
•Install and repair water valves, hydrants, air reliefs, vaults and main breaks.
•Operate valves and hydrants, break pavement with pneumatic paving breaker, excavate worksites, climb ladders, dig dirt by hand, remove manhole lids, flush hydrants, cut pipe, assemble fittings and transport materials and equipment to and from the worksite.
•Frequently enter vaults, trenches, and other difficult to access locations in order to perform work.
•Prepares and joins pipes and fittings to ensure proper fit and function.
•Backfill, tamp and restore excavations to proper compaction and to original condition.
•Direct traffic with the use of flag(s) to safely divert traffic away from work area(s).
•Operate a variety of District equipment and vehicles, to include trucks with manual transmissions.
•Understand and comply with all pertinent District Policies and Procedures.
•Perform the physical requirements of position.
•Assist crew members as directed to ensure work performed is completed effectively and in accordance with established procedures and standards.
•Maintain/clean equipment and tools to keep in good working order.

Required for All Jobs
•Perform a variety of other duties as assigned.
•Understand and comply with all District policies and procedures.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
•Excellent written and verbal communication skills to assist internal and external customers, co-workers and management professionally, regardless of provocation.
•Experience with personal computers, tablets, and/or other electronic devices, to include familiarity, with but not limited to, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word) and enterprise-wide software (e.g. SAP and GIS). (Entry proficiency)
•Ability to learn new or upgraded computer software as required.
•Mechanical ability and have experience with hand tools and power tools preferred (Entry
proficiency)

Education
•High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) – Required

Licenses and Certifications
•Have and maintain a valid driver’s license Upon Hire Required
•CDL – Group A – Commercial Drivers License Maintain valid license while holding
position within 60 Days Required
•Pre-employment Background Check, Drug Screen and Physical. Upon Hire Required
•Hearing Screen Upon Hire Required
•Respirator qualified within 60 Days Required
•Employee(s) in this position are covered under the Department of Transportation
Operator Qualifications testing requirements Upon Hire Required
•Employee(s) in this position are covered under the Department of Transportation Drug
and Alcohol testing provisions. This includes post-accident, random, reasonable
suspension and return to duty testing. Upon Hire Required
