Job description:
Incumbent works under the direction of the Health Director or designee, performing clinical and administrative tasks in the Immunization and STI Clinics of the Douglas County Health Department (DCHD).
Compensation: $21.68 – $25.83/Hour
Essential Functions:
Obtain patient medical history, measure and record vital signs (e.g., blood pressure, temperature, heart rate), documenting primary complaints.
Prepare patients and exam rooms, inform and assist healthcare professional during examination and treatment procedures.
Establish and maintain effective work relationships with clients, supervisors, County employees, elected officials, attorneys, law enforcement, judges, other agencies, and the public.
Comply with Civil Service Rules, collective bargaining agreements, County policies, department policies and laws to create a cooperative, safe, respectful and quality work environment.
Draw blood and perform basic lab tests per clinic procedures, standing orders and/or provider instructions.
Administer medications and vaccines per provider orders and/or nursing team instructions.
Sterilize and clean instruments/equipment.
Collect and prepare specimens and samples for laboratories.
Monitor medical and office supply inventory, notifying of replenishment needs.
Provide education treatments regarding treatment and procedures per provider and/or nursing team instructions.
Ensure patient comfort and confidentiality.
Comply with state laws/regulations and department protocols.
File, maintain and update patient records (e.g., charts, forms, electronic health record).
Assist billing processes (e.g., collecting payment, reviewing and reconciling receipts, generating and submitting insurance claims, managing claim denials).
Answer phones and route messages.
Schedule appointments and manage check-in/check-outs.
Prepare documents (e.g., reports, correspondence, mileage reports, time sheets, inspection reports).
Maintain job knowledge and skills (e.g. research, meetings, webinars, seminars, conferences and continuing education).
Promote a positive image of DCHD.
Serve on interdepartmental or community committees.
Participate in public health emergency response training and respond during emergency.
Safely operate a motor vehicle when required to travel on County business.
Report to work with regular, consistent attendance.
Perform other duties as assigned and directed.
Education and Work Experience and Other Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Current completion of nationally recognized Medical Assistant Program required.
Current nationally recognized Medical Assistant Certification or able to obtain within six (6) months of hire and maintained throughout employment required
OR
One (1) year of medical assistant experience required.
Basic life support/cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BLS/CPR) certification within six (6) months hire and maintained throughout employment required.
Valid driver’s license and own transportation upon hire and maintained throughout employment required.
Completion of a pre-employment criminal record check, physical assessment and conditional offer drug screen required.

Work is generally performed in an outpatient clinic setting. Noise level is usually moderate. Work hours are typically standard day-shift hours; however, schedule may vary (e.g. hours, weekends, overtime/extra hours, emergency call-in). Work requires potential exposure to chemicals, odors, biohazards. Work may be stressful when dealing with time constraints, multiple/changing priorities, limited resources and uncooperative/irate individuals.
Work requires some physical activity, including extended periods of sitting, standing, frequent walking, climbing, reaching, and occasional balancing, kneeling, and bending. Work also requires the ability to frequently lift/carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds and to occasionally 50 pounds.
Required sensory abilities include vision, hearing and touch. Visual abilities, correctable to normal ranges, include close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Communication abilities include the ability to talk and hear within normal ranges. Incumbent must possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computers and other equipment.
