Job description:
Incumbent works under the direction of the Director of Nursing or designee, providing patient care (e.g. medical, physical and psychiatric assessment, counseling, education, referral, medication distribution) for Douglas County Youth Center (DCYC) detainees.
Compensation: $40.22 – $50.83/Hour
Essential Functions:
Assess condition and administer detainee medical care (e.g. administering medications, monitoring vital signs, providing hands-on care) within scope of license.
Record medical histories, observing medical status and performing physical and mental assessments.
Update patient Electronic Health Record (EHR) information (e.g. medical information, healthcare contacts).
Establish and maintain effective work relationships with clients, supervisors, County employees, elected officials, attorneys, law enforcement, judges, other agencies, and the public.
Comply with Civil Service Rules, collective bargaining agreements, County policies, department policies and laws to create a cooperative, safe, respectful and quality work environment.
Adhere to DCYC medical protocols and procedures, recommending modifications.
Connect patients and providers via Telehealth.
Contact parents or guardians obtaining medical information and securing permission for medication and treatment.
Collaborate with physicians and healthcare professionals to develop and implement care plans.
Assist in preparing prescribed medication packets and communicate physician orders to the appropriate staff.
Distribute medication (e.g. ensuring consumption, charting dosage and reactions).
Respond to sick calls, complete evaluation and determine level of examination or hospital admission.
Collect specimens (e.g. urine, blood, wound cultures), administer routine injections, and complete tests, dressing changes, and irrigations.
Schedule detainee healthcare appointments (e.g. laboratory, psychiatric, radiology, dental).
Coordinate detainee continuity and enhancement of care (e.g. family, clinics, hospitals).
Respond to emergency medical codes, provide emergency treatment, and notify designated authorities (e.g. managers, law enforcement, emergency medical services).
Coordinate medication, supplies and laboratory specimen pickup/delivery, notifying supervisor/administration of supply, medication, and equipment needs.
Ensure psychiatric evaluation of potentially harmful detainees and arrange for security, transportation, and hospital admission.
Conduct physical therapy (e.g. whirlpool, exercises) as ordered.
Maintain job knowledge and skills (e.g. research, meetings, webinars, seminars, conferences, and continuing education).
Report to work with regular, consistent attendance.
Perform other duties as assigned and directed.
Education and Work Experience and Other Requirements:
Registered Nurse with a current Nebraska license or from a compact state recognized by the Nebraska Board of Nursing upon hire and maintained in good standing throughout employment required.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing required.*
Five (5) years as a registered nurse required.*
Basic life support/cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BLS/CPR) certification upon hire and maintained throughout employment required.
Experience in an adolescent detention healthcare setting preferred.
Completion of a pre-employment criminal record check, conditional offer drug screen and physical assessment required.
*Equivalent combination of education and work experience may be substituted for requirements on a year-for-year basis.

Work is generally performed in a medical office within a secure detention facility. Noise level is usually moderate to loud. Work hours are typically assigned shifts; however, schedule may vary (e.g., days, hours, weekends, overtime/extra time, holidays, emergency call-ins). Work involves potential exposure to biohazards and potential risk of injury by distraught individuals. Work may be stressful when dealing with time constraints, multiple/changing priorities, limited resources, emergency/crisis situations, and uncooperative/irate individuals.
Work requires some physical activity, including extended periods of standing, walking, bending, frequent reaching, and occasional sitting, kneeling, climbing, stooping, crouching, and balancing. Work also requires constant reaching between knee and shoulder as well as frequent reaching below knee level. Frequent fine motor movement of fingers/wrists and gross motor movement of elbows/arms is required. Work also requires the ability to frequently lift/carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Work also requires the ability to work in a confined environment and interact and care for socially maladjusted youth with complex medical and psychological illnesses.
Required sensory abilities include vision, hearing and touch. Visual abilities, correctable to normal ranges include close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Communication abilities include the ability to talk and hear within normal ranges. Incumbent must possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computers and other equipment.
