About One Omaha
One Omaha is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit on a mission to empower people where they live. We are dedicated to equipping residents with the knowledge, tools, and connections they need to navigate systems, advocate effectively, and strengthen their neighborhoods. We envision thriving neighborhoods across Omaha where engaged and informed residents lead change and create solutions for their communities.
Guided by our belief that public participation and capacity-building are essential to resilient, self-sufficient neighborhoods, One Omaha delivers education, training, and engagement opportunities that meet residents where they are. Our programs and services connect residents, neighborhood leaders, community organizations, and public agencies to each other, fostering collaboration, increasing civic participation, and building leadership pipelines.
Joining One Omaha means becoming part of a small, dedicated team with a big mission: to empower residents to build thriving and engaged neighborhoods. We value equity, collaboration, adaptability, and the belief that lasting change begins with informed and engaged communities.
Position Overview
The Communications Manager will be responsible for implementing and managing One Omaha’s communications strategy, driving visibility, and elevating the stories of our neighborhoods. This role plays a key part in amplifying our mission and expanding our audience across digital platforms, community partnerships, and media.
The Executive Director will provide strategic direction and input on communications efforts. Candidates should be energized by collaborative leadership and comfortable co-creating messages that reflect our values and vision. We’re seeking someone who understands the power of inclusive storytelling and respects community voice as a critical part of public engagement.
Key Responsibilities
Content Strategy & Management
Develop and manage a dynamic content calendar across all platforms (social media, newsletter, website, print).
Write and edit compelling, mission-aligned content that engages diverse audiences and reflects our values.
Coordinate multimedia content (graphics, videos, photography) for use across channels.
Community-Centered Storytelling
Work with residents, program participants, and partners to co-create stories that center lived experience and highlight community leadership.
Develop respectful, strength-based narratives that avoid saviorism and promote dignity, equity, and truth.
Brand Stewardship
Ensure consistency in brand voice, messaging, and visual identity across all platforms and materials.
Work with the Executive Director and team to evolve messaging in alignment with our strategic plan and DEI commitments.
Media & Public Relations
Draft press releases, media kits, and talking points for events and campaigns.
Build and maintain media relationships; pitch stories to local and regional outlets.
Digital Engagement
Manage website updates, analytics, and SEO.
Grow and engage audiences via social media using best practices and culturally responsive content.
Internal Collaboration & Input
Collaborate closely with Executive Director for approvals, feedback, and co-strategy development.
Support team-wide communications needs (e.g., program flyers, board materials, impact reporting).
Qualifications
At least 3 years of experience in nonprofit communications, journalism, public relations, or related field.
Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills with attention to tone, accessibility, and community context.
Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion – especially in language, imagery, and voice.
Familiarity with Canva, Mailchimp, Squarespace (or similar platforms).
Ability to receive and incorporate feedback, work collaboratively, and stay mission-aligned under pressure.
Experience working in or alongside BIPOC communities and/or grassroots organizing is a plus.
Guiding Principles & Belief Statement: One Omaha believes that by equipping people with the knowledge and tools to navigate systems and advocate effectively, we help neighborhoods become self-sufficient and resilient. This process of public participation and capacity-building empowers residents to address inequities, drive systems-level change, and build a future where they confidently create solutions.
Our Values in Action
We believe communication is power. That’s why this role is rooted in equity, transparency, and community voice. Candidates should bring a deep understanding of how communications can either perpetuate harm or build liberation – and strive for the latter. You should feel comfortable naming bias, centering those most impacted, and making space for new narratives.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary Range: $55,000 – $65,000 annually (based on experience)
Health, dental, and vision insurance (100% employer-paid)
Generous PTO and flexible work environment
Professional development support
