Job description:
Incumbent works under the direction of the District Court Administrator or designee, providing support to the Board of Mental Health.
Compensation: $26.44 – $28.85/Hour
Essential Functions:
Serve as primary support to the Board of Mental Health (BMH) and designated staff.
Attend all BMH meetings; prepare, file, and distribute minutes.
Prepare and distribute schedules, agendas, and notifications for hearings.
Communicate with the County Attorney’s Office, the Public Defender’s Office, physicians, and social workers regarding hearings, orders, treatment plans, and any matters related to Board of Mental Health proceedings.
Maintain a shared calendar, reserve meeting space, prepare files and hearing packets, set up hearing rooms and assist with in-person and virtual proceedings.
Arrange for a court reporter, interpreter, and sheriff transportation for hearings.
Coordinate with the County Attorney, Clerk of the District Court, and Sheriff’s Office for warrants, summonses, and notices.
Track and update information on individuals in treatment facilities under BMH jurisdiction including requesting treatment plans and updates from providers as required by state law.
Prepare documents for the BMH as directed.
File BMH documents with the Clerk of the District Court including orders, treatment plans, request for hearings and dismissals, and exhibits.
Review records on commitments, compliance with treatment plans, and compliance with reporting requirements maintained by the Clerk of the District Court. Notify the County Attorney’s Office and the Sheriff’s Office if offenders are out of compliance or whereabouts are unknown.
Process dismissals for 90-day continuances as directed.
Answer phones and respond to inquiries. Process incoming and outgoing mail.
Use court and administrative records systems to enter, retrieve, and update information.
Maintain office supplies and coordinate equipment service.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with judges, bailiffs, attorneys, supervisors, co-workers, other agencies, and the general public.
Ensure confidentiality of information in accordance with state statutes, Nebraska Mental Health Commitment Act, the Sex Offender Commitment Act, and departmental policies/procedures.
Report to work with regular, consistent attendance.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education and Work Experience and Other Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, social work, psychology, human services, public health, public administration, or sociology preferred.*
Two (2) years of professional office experience in business, court, or legal work.*
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and own mode of transportation at time of hire and throughout the course of employment.
Experience/training in operating personal computers, including a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (e.g. Word, Excel) required.
Completion of a pre-employment criminal record check and a conditional offer drug screen required.
*Equivalent combination of work experience and education may be substituted for requirements on a year-for-year basis.

Work is performed in an office setting during standard day shift hours; however, schedule may vary (e.g. evenings, weekends, overtime/extra hours). Work is also performed at off-site treatment facilities. Noise level is usually quiet. Work may be stressful when dealing with time constraints, multiple/changing priorities, limited resources and uncooperative/uncontrolled individuals.
An incumbent must have the ability to frequently lift and/or carry equipment, supplies and other materials weighing up to 25 lbs., and to occasionally lift and/or carry equipment, supplies and other materials weighing up to 25 lbs. An incumbent must also possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to use hands and arms to reach, finger, handle, grasp and feel; and operate the following: computers, and any other equipment that is used to perform the essential functions of the job.
Work hours may occasionally be required before or after daylight hours. Noise level is usually moderate. Vision abilities, correctable to normal ranges, include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Communication abilities include the ability to talk and hear within normal ranges.
Work requires interaction with the general public, and may be stressful when dealing with irate citizens and/or time constraints.
