Incumbent works under the direction of the Accounts Receivable/Support Services Supervisor or designee, performing all patient/client billing and collections functions for assigned accounts of Douglas County health care facilities.

Compensation: $18.45/Hour

Essential Functions:
Manage all aspects of assigned patient/client accounts, ensuring complete and consistent record keeping for all activity.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients/clients, supervisors, County employees, elected officials, attorneys, law enforcement, judges, other agencies, area health care facilities, vendors, and the public.
Comply with Civil Service policies and regulations, collective bargaining agreements, County policies, and laws to create a cooperative, safe, respectful and quality work environment.
Review charges and verify services provided by County health care facilities in compliance with applicable state, federal and third-party reimbursement regulations.
Make determinations of financial responsibility for specific services provided to patients and prepare billings accordingly.
Work with supervisor on complex accounts to ensure correct billing.
Bill patients and appropriate third-parties (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid, insurance companies, etc.) in a timely manner based on financial responsibility.
Ensure notes on account are updated and maintained for all accounts.
Calculate individual account adjustments according to applicable agreements and regulations.
Follow up on unreimbursed accounts, rebilling responsible party as needed to obtain payment.
Prepare a variety of reports (e.g., production reports, write off recommendations, collection referrals, Medicare/Medicaid payments, etc.).
Answer inquiries about billing (e.g., individual account status, billing procedures, entitlement benefits, etc.) ensuring the confidentially of patient information.
Submit and follow-up on Help Desk tickets and electronic health record vendor tickets, ensuring efficient operating practices.
Attend classes, meetings and in-service training programs as directed.
Report to work with regular, consistent attendance.
Perform other duties as directed and assigned.

Education and Work Experience and Other Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Two (2) years* experience with medical billing or accounts receivable bookkeeping required.
Must type 25 net words per minute.
Work experience with automated medical billing system preferred.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license at the time of hire and throughout employment.
Completion of a pre-employment criminal background check and post-offer drug screen.
*Equivalent education beyond high school may be substituted for work experience requirements on a year-for-year basis.

Work is generally performed in an office setting. Noise level is usually moderate. Hours of work are generally standard day-shift hours however work hours may occasionally vary (e.g. weekend, emergency call-in and overtime). Work may be stressful when managing multiple priorities, dealing with time constraints, limited resources and uncooperative/irate individuals.
Work requires some physical activity, including extended periods of sitting and standing, frequent walking, and occasional balancing, kneeling, bending, and reaching. Work also requires the ability to frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 10 pounds, and occasionally up to 25 pounds.
Required sensory abilities include vision, hearing and touch. Visual abilities, correctable to normal ranges, include close, distance and color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Communication abilities include the ability to talk and hear within normal ranges. An incumbent must possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computers and other equipment used to perform the essential functions of this job.
