Whitney M. Young, Jr. at the White House on January 18, 1964
Our Foundation
Whitney Moore Young, Jr. was one of the most celebrated leadersof the Civil Rights Era. As head of the National Urban League, Mr. Young helped thousands of people struggling against discrimination. Unique among black leaders, he took the fight directly to the powerful white elite, gaining allies in business and government, including three presidents.
Mr. Young worked behind the scenes, shaking the right hands, making the right deals, and opening the right doors to opportunity for all Americans. Whitney Young, Jr. was the president of the Urban League of Nebraska in the late 1950s.
