POSITION OVERVIEW
This job opportunity is with the Judicial Branch of the Federal Government. The judicial branch is one of the three separate and distinct branches of the U.S. government and is independent from the other two. The Clerk’s Office of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Nebraska is seeking a full-time case administrator in Lincoln, Nebraska. Case Administrators perform various functions and are responsible for maintaining and processing case information and managing the progression of cases from opening to final disposition, in accordance with approved internal controls, procedures and rules. Case Administrators are fully proficient at managing the progression of cases, maintaining official case records, monitoring the completion of required procedural steps, preparing case documents for appeal, reviewing filed documents to determine conformity, and taking appropriate action, ensuring that all orders and automated entries are appropriately and accurately docketed, and making summary entries on the docket of documents and proceedings. The case administrator also assists members of the public and other court staff who call or visit the clerk’s office.
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Process Notice of Appeals and appeal-related documents.
• Assist customers at the reception area, phone, and emails with case inquiries and court related fee questions.
• Filed documents. Review filed documents to determine conformity. Take appropriate action in accordance with the internal procedures, rules, practices, and filing requirements. Prepare correspondence regarding file inquiries, docket sheets, and other file request information. Refer cases to judges for action.
• Copy work. Make copies of court records when requested by customers.
• Check for prior or prohibited filing.
• Process new case files. Open or quality control cases in case management system. Docket or quality control initial opening events. Sort, classify, and file case records. Maintain integrity of the filing system by such means as monitoring proper access to records and maintaining timely and accurate filing of documents. Retrieve files and make copies of records for court personnel, attorneys, and others. Certify court documents and ensure data quality.
• Prepare, ship, and retrieve records from the appropriate Federal Records Center. Process incoming and outgoing mail. Receive and stamp incoming documents. Maintain court files.
• Receive payments and issue receipts. Secure funds in cash register. Balance cash drawer at the end of the day. Process credit card payments for filed documents.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications must be met at the time of the application.
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent, two years of general experience, and one year of specialized experience. A college degree is preferred but not required. Experience with a federal or state court and/or familiarity with electronic case filing, especially the court’s automated system, is highly desirable.
Specialized experience:
Progressively responsible clerical or administrative experience requiring the regular and recurring application of clerical procedures that demonstrates the ability to apply a body of rules, regulations, directives, or laws and involves the routine use of specialized terminology and automated software and equipment for word processing, data entry, or report generation. Such experience is commonly encountered in court judicial systems, law firms, legal counsel offices, banking and credit firms, educational institutions, social service organizations, insurance companies, and real estate and title offices.
