Incumbent works under the supervision of the Manager, Administrative Services and the Medical Director/designee providing quality nursing services for detainees of the Douglas County Youth Center (DCYC) including medical care, physical and psychiatric assessment, counseling, referral services, and distribution of medications.
Compensation: $39.05 – $49.35/Hour
Essential Functions:
Assess condition and administer medical care for physical and mental condition(s) of detainees contacting physician when necessary.
Update all Electronic Health Record (EHR) patient information into the portal.
Connect patients and providers via Telehealth.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, supervisors, County employees, elected officials, attorneys, law enforcement, judges, other agencies, and the public.
Comply with Civil Service policies and regulations, collective bargaining agreements, County policies, and laws to create a cooperative, safe, respectful and quality work environment.
Contact parents, guardians, or physicians obtaining medical information and securing permission for medication and treatment,
Ensure all medical information and contacts are documented accurately.
Assist in preparing prescribed medication packets and communicate physician’s orders to the appropriate staff, ensure distribution of medication, and chart medications and treatments appropriately.
Review sick call slips from detainees; conduct sick calls, evaluate examination and/or hospital admission.
Collect specimens (e.g. urine, blood, wound cultures) and administer routine injections, tests, dressing changes, and irrigations as ordered by physicians.
Schedule various appointments for detainees (e.g. laboratory, psychiatric, radiology, dental examinations).
Contact detainee’s family, clinics, hospitals, etc., providing continuity and enhancement of care.
Respond to emergency medical codes, deliver appropriate emergency treatment, and notify designated authorities (e.g. Managers, Sheriff Deputy, Emergency Medical).
Arrange for pickup/delivery of medications, supplies, and/or laboratory specimens at designated locations; notifying supervisor/administration of needed supplies, medications, and equipment.
Arrange for psychiatric evaluation of potentially dangerous detainees; and arrange for security, transportation, and hospital admission in adherence to established procedures.
Conduct physical therapy (e.g. whirlpool, exercises) as ordered and as expertise permits.
Remain alert to current changes in nursing practices and attend meetings, classes, conferences, workshops, and/or seminars as directed/approved.
Safely operate a motor vehicle when required to travel on County business.
Report to work with regular, consistent attendance.
Perform other duties as assigned and directed.
Education and Work Experience and Other Requirements:
Registered Nurse with a current Nebraska license required.
One (1) year of experience as a Registered Nurse required.
Experience in an adolescent detention healthcare setting preferred.
Completion of a pre-employment criminal records check, post-offer drug screen and physical assessment.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license at the time of hire and throughout employment.

Work is performed in a youth detention facility. Noise level is usually moderate but can occasionally be loud. Work is performed during assigned shift; however schedule will occasionally vary (e.g. days, hours, holidays, weekends, overtime). Work involves potential exposure to biohazards and infectious materials and potential risk of injury by distraught detainees. Work may be stressful when responding to emergency medical situations, dealing with multiple priorities, time constraints, or uncooperative/irate persons.
Work requires physical activity including extended periods of standing, walking, and bending with occasional sitting, kneeling, climbing, stooping, crouching, carrying, and balancing. Work also requires constant reaching between knee and shoulder as well as frequent reaching below knee level. Frequent fine motor movement of fingers/wrists and gross motor movement of elbows/arms is required. Incumbents must have the ability to frequently lift/carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Incumbents must have the ability to work in a confined environment and interact with adolescents who may be verbally abusive, aggressive, and/or mentally impaired. Incumbents must also have the ability to respond appropriately to emergency medical situations.
Required sensory abilities include vision, hearing and touch. Visual abilities, correctable to normal ranges include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Communication abilities include the ability to talk and hear within normal ranges. Incumbents must possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computers and other equipment.
